Fully Electric Cars. These are cars that move using a large electric battery powering an electric motor. They do not take any petrol. Also called Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), they produce no exhaust, which is far kinder to the environment – petrol and diesel transport produce 19% of New Zealand’s greenhouse gases. 84% of New Zealand electricity is generated by rain (hydro dams), geothermal, and wind3, so the source of the car’s fuel is environmentally friendly, and inexpensive, and produced locally (We import over a billion dollars of petrol and three billion dollars of crude oil from overseas each year4 and local electricity generation is cheaper).
